A variant is a specific version of a product that differs by an attribute like size, color or pack count, while sharing the same base product. It matters in e-commerce data because price, stock and even reviews can differ by variant: a shirt's medium might be in stock while its large is sold out, so data collected at the product level without variant detail hides real differences. A well-structured catalog or price feed lists each variant as its own row with its own SKU, rather than collapsing them into a single product entry, which is what makes variant-level analysis like stock availability or assortment gaps possible in the first place.
