A category path is the sequence of categories and subcategories a store files a product under, like Home > Kitchen > Mugs, usually shown as breadcrumbs on the product page. It matters in e-commerce data because it's how assortment and share-of-shelf comparisons are scoped: you compare products within the same category path, not across unrelated ones. Category paths differ between stores: one site's Home > Kitchen might be another's Housewares > Dining, so comparing category-level data across stores usually requires mapping each store's own path to a shared taxonomy rather than assuming the paths line up directly.
