Share of shelf is the percentage of visible listings in a category or search result that belong to a given brand or retailer, measured the way a shopper would actually see the page. It matters because online visibility doesn't map cleanly to market share: a brand can be well-stocked but buried on page three of search results, which a simple assortment count wouldn't catch. Measuring share of shelf requires crawling the actual category or search page, recording position alongside product identity, and repeating the measurement over time since rankings and results shift. It's most useful compared across competitors or tracked over time, rather than read as a single number.
